Hundreds of people marched this Saturday, October 12, in the city of Bilbao, on the occasion of Indigenous Resistance Day, to vindicate the struggles and resistance of indigenous peoples against Spanish colonization.
In this context and under the slogans: NO to interference in Venezuela! And Stop Fascism!, collectives, political sectors, social organizations, Latin American associations, and unions of the Basque Country, in coordination with the Consulate General of Venezuela in Bilbao, called for a march to send a powerful message of solidarity to the resistance of the Venezuelan people and the Bolivarian Revolution.
The march began at Plaza Elíptica (Plaza Moyua) in the city of Bilbao, continuing its route along Gran Vía and Avenida Buenos Aires to finally reach Plaza Venezuela, where they were welcomed by popular artists who showcased Basque and Latin American cultural expressions. Along the way, in addition to the displays of solidarity towards Venezuela, other causes of resistance such as that of Palestine and Latin American indigenous peoples were also present.
The Consul General of Venezuela, Glenna del Valle Cabello de Daboin, began her speech by recalling that since 2002, Commander Hugo Chávez stopped celebrating “Columbus Day, the so-called Encounter of Two Worlds, or Hispanic Day, to commemorate the resistance of indigenous peoples,” paving the way for the commemoration of Indigenous Resistance Day.
She also recalled that President Nicolás Maduro declared a few days ago that this historical period of “genocide, extermination, slavery, colonialism” could no longer be whitewashed.
Finally, she expressed that October 12 “is a historic day to value the culture of our aborigines and to loudly remember our combative and rebellious origin,” concluding her words with gratitude to the Basque and Latin American peoples present for their displays of “solidarity, love, and commitment” to Venezuela.
The march was accompanied by representatives of the Embassy of Venezuela in Madrid and the Consuls General of Venezuela in Barcelona, Canary Islands, Madrid, and Vigo.
