Secretary of ALBA-TCP assures that the uncontrolled purchase of vaccines exposes neoliberalism

The Executive Secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), Sasha Llorenti, pointed out this Sunday that the inequality promoted by neoliberalism can be evidenced with the acquisition of vaccines against COVID -19.

During an interview on the program Here with Ernesto Villegas, led by the People’s Power Minister for Culture of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Ernesto Villegas, the former Bolivian minister assured that other countries have contracts for the purchase of vaccines for nine times the number of its inhabitants. “It is an immorality, a despicable act.”

“We have to realize that just as they do with vaccines, it also happens with other drugs, with technology, among other things.”

In this context, he mentioned the creation of the Humanitarian Fund of the ALBA Bank that will soon be available to member countries for the immediate purchase of vaccines and treatments that will help them fight the pandemic. “We are doing the possible tasks to make it effective quickly.”

On the other hand, the Secretary of ALBA-TCP evoked the call of the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, for the cessation of the imposition of unilateral coercive measures.

“From a multilateral perspective, we have to ask ourselves what are the common threats that humanity has, in particular our region. Policies that seek to destroy the multilateralism are a great threat, like the pandemic, climate change, attempts at nuclear conflagration, technological disruption, inequality, among others”, he asserted.

He pointed out that it is vitally important that Latin America and the Caribbean continue with the tasks left by commanders Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez with the rescue of integration mechanisms, especially Celac and Unasur.

The ALBA-TCP will hold a new meeting in February to evaluate the progress in the implementation of these initiatives for the benefit of the neediest countries, the executive secretary reported.
