ALBA-TCP reiterates the importance of ACTO to forest fires in the Amazon

The countries that make up the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Treaty of Commerce of the Peoples (ALBA-TCP), wish to express their solidarity in the face of the terrible situation that is affecting our Mother Earth, specifically in the territory of the Amazon where various countries of the South American region converge, and therefore wish to join forces to help mitigate the terrible effects and consequences of forest fires for biodiversity, local communities, and the fight against global warming. For the countries that make up the ALBA, the Amazon not only represents the lung of the Planet, it is a territory that houses an important biodiversity reserve, water basins, native communities and is an important recipient of emissions that guarantee a balance and stability in our climate. Likewise, ALBA countries reiterate the importance of sustainable development of the various activities that are carried out in such sensitive ecosystems in the Amazon basin, which should not be guided by unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, and activities that do not allow the regeneration of ecological cycles. Finally, the ALBA-TCP countries reiterate the importance of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization forum, as a primary instance to cover all matters inherent to the Amazon Basin, in response to the principles of sovereignty and self-determination of each of its member countries, and as an organization offer to help the peoples of the region that have been affected, including indigenous and peasant communities.
