Venezuela celebrates 31 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child through Public Consultation

In Venezuela, within the framework of 31 years since the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 20 days have passed since the implementation of a Public Consultation process to review its application in the country.

Following all the biosecurity measures, the consultation has traveled the states of Lara, Zulia, Carabobo and Portuguesa. It will soon be deployed in Táchira and Amazonas.

In the meetings by states, the contributions and recommendations of the institutions that make up the Protection System for children and adolescents were collected, such as Protection Courts, Public Defense, Public Ministry, Ombudsman’s Office, protection councils and defenders, among others.

Also, videoconferences have been held with the presence of public servants of the Supreme Court of Justice, Public Ministry, Ombudsman, representatives of the Executive Power, such as the People’s Power Ministries for Internal Relations, Justice and Peace; Health, Food, Work, Education, Planning, Women and Gender Equality, Youth and Sports, Communication and Information, Housing, and Communes and Social Movements, among others.

During the telematic consultations, workers of the Autonomous Institute of the National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Idenna) also participated, as well as teachers of initial and primary education who expressed themselves against the international sanctions imposed on Venezuela, denouncing that they represent the greatest obstacle to the full enjoyment of rights and guarantees of children.

In this regard, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Council, Larry Devoe, explained that this date is important because:

“Within the framework of the 31st anniversary of the Convention we have made significant progress in favor of children and adolescents, and the challenges are now greater because we face international sanctions that hit the family and children.”

This Public Consultation will take place until December of the current year and, during the face-to-face and virtual meetings, topics such as: Legislation, Right to Good Treatment, security, justice, rights to education, health, food and recreation, among others will be addressed.
