UN High Commissioner for Human Rights ignores fact-finding mission’s report, calls for lifting sanctions

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, reiterated on Friday her call to lift the unilateral coercive measures that have been imposed, outside the UN Charter and international law, on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

In her oral update on the situation of Human Rights in Venezuela, on the occasion of the 45th Regular Session of the UN Human Rights Council, the high commissioner warned that “additional sanctions on diesel exports may further exacerbate the already critical gasoline shortage and hamper the distribution of humanitarian aid and essential goods.”

“I want to reiterate my call to lift economic sanctions to facilitate the allocation of resources during the pandemic,” she stressed.

In her presentation, the high commissioner recognized the progress made by her Office in cooperation with the Venezuelan Government and the endorsement of the Letter of Understanding on September 20, 2019, only working instrument of the United Nations with Venezuela on human rights.

Likewise, she recognized the recent adoption of positive measures by the Government of Venezuela, such as the pardoning of 110 persons, and the implementation of COVID-19 biosecurity protocols in healthcare centers, as well as the efforts made to provide care to those Venezuelans returning to their country.

“We will continue providing technical assistance to the Government,” affirmed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
