President Maduro urges European Union to abandon colonialist mindset

President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro rejected Tuesday, June 16, the European Union’s statement about the decisions recently made by Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice.

In this regard, the Venezuelan president urged the European Union to abandon its colonialist mindset and to worry about the difficulties caused by novel coronavirus, racism and the economic crisis in its territory.

“European Union, out of Venezuela. It’s enough,” said President Maduro during a meeting with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

He expressed his solidarity with the afro-descendent people protesting in the main cities of the world to demand justice and equality, and said that all the statues of colonialists, assassins and imperialists in Venezuela were torn down a long time ago. “Venezuela is not a backyard for anybody!” he added.

On Tuesday, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrel said in a statement that the decisions recently made by Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice restrict democracy in the country and makes it difficult to resolve the crisis.

According to Borrell, the key for a credible electoral process is “an independent and balanced” National Electoral Country (CNE), an environment allowing “the participation of political parties and candidates,” negotiations between the government and the opposition aimed at the creation of a new CNE, and the lifting the ban on opposition parties.”
