Cuba rejects U.S. military aggression against Venezuela

Calling for a ceasefire, including non-conventional ones, Cuba rejected the military aggressions of the US government against Venezuela, which foiled a sea incursion by a group of mercenaries into its territory on Sunday, May 3. President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned attempts to re-impose the neocolonial past, by bringing back the Monroe Doctrine, on Latin America and the Caribbean, thus breaking the proclamation of zones of peace. During his speech at the Virtual Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-aligned Movement, he insisted on the lifting of unilateral coercive measures against the sustainable development of peoples. In this regard, he pointed out that these measures limit the capacity of states to efficiently address the COVID-19 sanitary emergency, which registers today more than 3.5 million cases worldwide. “If solidarity had been globalized, history would have been different,” he said as he denounced that Donald Trump’s administration attacks multilateralism by intentionally harming the World Health Organization (WHO). Díaz-Canel raised the need of holding annual meetings of health ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement and stressed that Cuba is willing to share its experience with those nations requiring it to face the pandemic. “Cuba does not abandon its solidarity,” he highlighted when referring to the technical assistance provided to other countries by sending specialists and medicines to treat coronavirus. Díaz-Canel stressed it is necessary to join efforts to boost cooperation in order to overcome COVID-19.
