Association of Caribbean States coordinates the creation of a working group to combat Covid-19

The Foreign Ministers of Health of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) held this Monday the first regional technical meeting of the Member States and Associates of the ACS on Covid-19, a space where the delegations discussed the creation of a humanitarian corridor to address the inequality of vulnerable groups during disasters and crises, as well as the establishment of a regional mitigation and recovery strategy in the platform’s member countries. The meeting, conducted under the videoconference method, allowed discussion on the creation of a high-level multisectoral technical working group with experts from key sectors, in order to provide updates on the current situation and behavior of Covid-19 -regionally and globally-, focused on morbidity, mortality, and recovery. The multi-sectoral technical working group would be responsible for providing an overview, the design of an action plan, and coordinating cooperative efforts between Member States and Associate Members. Likewise, they will carry out activities to share knowledge and best practices, as well as initiatives that support scientific research, in order to reduce the knowledge gap between countries. Also, among its objectives is the exchange of information that will allow communication of the development of economic recovery actions to reactivate the economies of the region. Therefore, the working group will convene virtual meetings that allow it to carry out its mission. In this sense, it should be noted that this first regional technical meeting of the Member and Associated States of the ACS, had the participation of the Vice-minister for the Caribbean, Raúl Li Causi, as well as representatives of the Venezuelan Ministry of Health; and it was carried out by virtue of what was agreed in a videoconference held on March 24, on the proposal of the Cuban Delegation to form a high-level multisectoral technical group.
