TSJ would be in charge of deliberating the postponement of parliamentary elections due to Covid-19

The Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) -through its Constitutional Chamber- would be in charge of deliberating on the postponement of parliamentary elections in Venezuela, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, said President Nicolás Maduro, when asked about the elections scheduled for next December. During an interview on the radio program La Pizarra, broadcast in Argentina by the AM 750 station, the Head of State emphasized that the priorities in Venezuela are focused on the “containment and overcoming of the pandemic, the life of the people and social protection”. “We have the most terrifying pandemic that humanity has experienced in the last hundred years, we have this priority and it would be irresponsible for me to say that there must be elections”, he emphasized. Regarding the permanence of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), he added that “the constituent has been a necessary power for stability, for the peace of the country” and that “it will be the decision of their parliamentarians if they extend their mandate until the pandemic is controlled in Venezuela”. By constitutional decree, parliamentary elections must be held during 2020, for a new mandate on January 5, 2021, which would be the fifth term of the Magna Carta of 1999.
