Foreign Ministers of Venezuela and Russia condemn US interference in Nicaragua after general elections

The People’s Power Minister for Foreign Relations of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Félix Plasencia, and his counterpart from the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, condemned the violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Nicaragua by the United States Government, after the successful election day in which the preliminary results showed the Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, current president of the Central American nation, as the winner.

In a press conference held this Monday, within the framework of his official visit to Moscow, Foreign Minister Plasencia described as a “franchise” the actions that imperialism wants to impose:

“Not only in Latin America but even in European countries, to extirpate political projects and overthrow governments that are not subjected or alienated with Washington’s decisions. That has happened in Europe, it was intended to be applied in Venezuela and is happening in Nicaragua”, he said.

He recognized the “Courage and forceful defense of the Nicaraguan Government of its democratic process and, in this case, of its electoral system and the right of the Nicaraguan people to vote for the authorities they want”.

He stated that the interventionist attitude of the United States was revealed even before the electoral process in Nicaragua, but despite the imperial boycott, the elections were held in peace and tranquility.

“The Nicaraguan people expressed themselves and decided to follow the democratic route led by the government authorities (of Daniel Ortega), who have built happiness and tranquility (…) We must reject Washington’s interference in our region and forcefully reject that franchise that they unsuccessfully insist on imposing in the world”, he emphasized.

For his part, the Russian diplomat stressed that “it is unacceptable and we strongly condemn” the campaign unleashed by the White House to ignore the results of the Nicaraguan elections, which were carried out with total normality and in compliance with the Constitution.

“According to the Constitution of Nicaragua and like other constitutions of Latin American countries and other regions, including the Constitution of the United States, national sovereignty belongs to the people and only the people, in this case the Nicaraguan people, have the right to decide on the legitimacy of the electoral process in their own country”, said Chancellor Lavrov.

He recalled that the pressure against Nicaragua began in 2018 when the United States began to interfere in the internal affairs of the Central American nation.
