Sacha Llorenti rejects US interference in the Nicaraguan democratic process

The Executive Secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), Sacha Llorenti, rejected this Monday the interventionist strategy of the United States administration against the legitimate and constitutional government of Nicaragua, after the recent sanctions against Nicaraguan officials and relatives of President Daniel Ortega.

The list of sanctions issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) includes Camila Ortega Murillo, daughter of the Nicaraguan president and Coordinator of the Creative Economy Commission along with Leonardo Reyes, president of the Central Bank of Nicaragua; Edwin Castro, deputy of the National Assembly; and Julio Rodríguez, general of the army and director of the Institute of Military Social Welfare.

For Secretary Llorenti, these actions, emanating from the Treasury Department, are part of the script drawn up by the US empire to attack the peoples who have decided to be free and who are working towards the strengthening of Latin American unity.

Sacha Llorenti: Venezuela, Cuba y Nicaragua representan un ejemplo para la humanidad en la defensa de la democracia

His statements were issued during an interview with Channel 4 of Nicaragua, in which he made reference to the fact that the objectives of the United States on the region follow the pattern of appropriation of natural resources, obtaining cheap labor, control of strategic trade zones and geopolitical control over the territory.

He specified that one of the most common actions is the derision of the peoples:

“That has been the common practice of empires throughout history; that is why our struggle is anti-imperialist, because it is based on principles; We have to stop being naive and know what interests are behind these measures; They cannot talk to us about democracy if they violate international law themselves”, he declared.

In this sense, he recalled that the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean is essential to break with these coup-plotting and interventionist strategies. All this is possible thanks to sub-regional organizations such as ALBA-TCP, which is based on principles such as solidarity among peoples.

“These countries gathered in ALBA are writing one of the most glorious pages in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean (…) They do not forgive us for this unbridled love for freedom, independence and sovereignty”, said the Executive Secretary.

He recalled that a clear expression of ALBA’s solidarity is found in the actions taken in the midst of the pandemic. He cited as an example the construction of the Vaccine Bank, the Aid Fund for Family Farming and the delivery of oxygen to other nations. “ALBA is a family, with an absolutely clear vision on how the world should be”, he said.

Therefore, he assured that “when the right-wing loses, it speaks of fraud; It happened in Bolivia, it is happening in Peru and Donald Trump used the same script; They are interested in democracy as a discourse to impose their agendas, to impose their interests. We have to be very alert, we must not be naive, naivety is very expensive. The right-wing has no homeland and that is the big difference between us and them”.

On November 7, the Nicaraguan people will participate in the general elections where the president of the Central American nation, 90 deputies of the National Assembly and 20 deputies of the Central American Parliament will be elected.
