Secretary Sacha Llorenti: It is the resistance of the attacked peoples that has kept ALBA-TCP afloat

The Executive Secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), Sacha Llorenti, assured this Tuesday that it is the struggle of the peoples that has allowed this organization of Latin American and Caribbean integration to exist.

During an interview with the program Cruce de Palabras, broadcast by Telesur, he pointed out that “the great advantage is that the most attacked countries of the Alliance (Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua) through their governments and their people have managed to resist this terrible imperial offensive”.

In the case of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, he said that a sign of this strength is the resistance not only to the measures imposed by the government of the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, to reinforce the economic and financial blockade; but also the overcoming of the attempted assassination against the Head of State, Nicolás Maduro, and the military incursion with hired mercenaries.

In this sense, he explained that the fact that the ALBA-TCP has been able to stay afloat “in this stormy sea” is due to the resistance of its people and the level of political awareness that they have achieved. “This has not only allowed their countries to resist, but ALBA with them”, he added.

Regarding the premise that the new White House administration will bring changes to Latin America, he said that during Donald Trump’s period 243 measures were imposed and “almost six months after Biden’s inauguration, none have been lifted”.

The Executive Secretary of ALBA-TCP condemned the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic is used as a weapon to reinforce these measures “illegal in light of international law (…) it is not that they have alleviated something so that the people can better face this pandemic. They have used the pandemic as a weapon to continue executing this collective punishment”.

In this context, he expressed the need to create an international order based on common rules, principles and purposes that are respected by all the countries of the world in order to face global phenomena such as climate change, inequality and even the possibility of nuclear war.

“The agreement reached in 1945 with the United Nations Charter has been diluted until now, and there are countries like the United States that impose unilateral coercive measures in disregard of the United Nations Charter”, he declared.

On the other hand, he explained that through the ALBA-TCP a humanitarian fund has been created for the purchase of vaccines for Eastern Caribbean countries, which are part of the Alliance, with which between 13% and 14% of the necessary doses have been acquired.

He also highlighted that by means of an air bridge it was possible to transfer vaccines from the People’s Republic of China to Dominica, “free of charge.”
