Venezuela celebrates International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

On the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, President Nicolás Maduro recalled on April 24 that the current times and challenges could only be faced in a new world of balance, respect, diversity and shared brotherhood.

“Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is the only way to ensure the development of the peoples. There’s no other option,” wrote the Venezuelan president on his Twitter account @NicolasMaduro.

Also, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza stressed that strengthening multilateralism today is a guarantee for peace.

“Today we celebrate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, established in 2018 through resolution 73/127 of the United Nations General Assembly and promoted by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) under Venezuela’s presidency,” wrote the chief of Venezuelan diplomacy on his Twitter account.

Two years ago, the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was celebrated for the first time to promote the UN Charter and its principles of resolving disputes among countries through peaceful means, and foster and support the backbone of the United Nations: sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established when Venezuela chaired the Non-Aligned Movement (2016-2019) to promote the principles that gave rise to this multilateral organization after the Afro–Asian Bandung Conference in 1955.

“Today, we have the opportunity to rebuild better than in the past and work together for a healthy, equitable, peaceful, more sustainable future,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres on April 24, 2020.
