ALBA- TCP assesses progress, challenges in women, gender equality issues

In order to assess the progress and challenges in the construction of a fairer, more egalitarian society without exclusion, the ALBA-TCP High-ranking authorities held a virtual meeting on Wednesday on Women and Gender Issues.

The meeting took place on the anniversary of the birth of Vilma Espín, Cuban revolutionary woman who fought for women’s empowerment in Cuba’s political, economic, social life.

The ALBA-TCP Executive Secretary, Sacha Llorenti, extolled the participation of women in different state agencies and informed that some ALBA-TCP member countries lead gender equality rankings in the world.

“Nicaragua ranks first in the world in women in ministerial level positions. Cuba ranks second in women in parliaments; Nicaragua ranks fourth, Grenada ranks eight and Bolivia ranks tenth, but there are still some issues to be solved,” he stressed.

In the meeting’s final declaration, ALBA-TCP urged governments and institutions to develop programs and policies to guarantee women permanent access to quality medical and justice services.

Likewise, the regional bloc highlighted that the crisis worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic has had a particular social, economic impact on women and girls as it has aggravated multiple and interrelated forms of violence.

ALBA-TCP also proposed that the legislative agenda of its member countries must include an appropriate vision of gender and timely address adolescent pregnancy and family planning.
