Venezuela urges the UN to appoint a new special envoy in the face of the armed conflict between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and Morocco

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela follows with deep concern the events that took place today, November 13th, in Guerguerat, the southern tip of Western Sahara on the borders with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, which show the reactivation of an armed conflict between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco, with regrettable consequences for peace and stability in the region. Venezuela calls on the United Nations Secretary-General to appoint a new special envoy to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum of Western Sahara (MINURSO), established by resolution 690 of the Security Council of April 29th, 1991, in accordance with the settlement proposals accepted on August 30th, 1988, by Morocco and the Polisario Front. The appointment of a new special envoy will open the necessary spaces for diplomacy and rapprochement between the parties. The pending Referendum is clearly the most effective mechanism for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the prevention of tensions in the region. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, through its Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy, accompanies the processes of self-determination of the peoples, always within the framework of International Law and specially of respect and adherence to the Resolutions of the United Nations Organization.
