Venezuela appreciates support of the European Union before the financing request to the IMF

The People’s Power Minister for Foreign Relations, Jorge Arreaza, appreciated the support of the European Union for the financing request from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), under the premise of strengthening the response capacities of the Venezuelan health system in the containment of Covid-19. «We positively appreciate that the European Union, through Josep Borrell, affirms that it supports the financing requests to the International Monetary Fund made by Venezuela and Iran to face the Covid-19 contingency. They understand the damage that US sanctions do”, said the Venezuelan diplomat through his Twitter account @jaarreaza. The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, affirmed this Monday, after meeting by videoconference with the bloc’s foreign ministers, that the coalition has agreed to support the request of Venezuela and the Islamic Republic of Iran before the IMF to have financial support. Both countries, said the former Spanish foreign minister, «are in a very difficult situation, especially due to US sanctions that prevent them from obtaining income from the sale of oil». On March 17, President Nicolás Maduro officially asked the IMF for financing of 5 billion dollars to face the coronavirus pandemic in Venezuela.

In a letter addressed to the IMF director general, Kristalina Georgieva, the Venezuelan president explained that these resources will contribute significantly to strengthen the detection and response systems for the coronavirus in Venezuela. «At this crucial moment, and aware of the aggressiveness and high level of contagion of this disease, we will continue to take rapid and vigorous measures to stop its spread», said the dignitary in the letter that Foreign Minister Arreaza released on that occasion.
