Venezuela and Russia: 76 years of diplomatic relations, strengthened for the benefit of their peoples

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Russian Federation celebrate on March 14 the 76th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, which have increasingly become stronger thanks to the two country’s convergence in the multilateral sphere and their broad cooperation agenda.

“Thanks to Presidents Vladimir Putin and Nicolás Maduro, we have developed an exemplary model of cooperation and promotion of the principles of International Law,” wrote the Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, on his Twitter account to commemorate this emblematic date.

Russia and Venezuela strengthened their diplomatic, friendly, cooperation agreements when Commander Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian Government took office, enabling the consolidation of commercial exchange for the benefit of their countries.

Russia-Venezuela relations are currently are at their best period with different alliances in areas such as health, economy, culture and military. Also, they shared a similar ideological, geopolitical vision, and the two countries have an important cooperation to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent years, as the United States and its allies have stepped up their aggression against Venezuela, Russia has expressed its will to defend international law and shown its support to help the South American nation overcome the criminal sanctions and blockade imposed by imperial forces.

In a recent interview with an international news agency, Foreign Minister Arreaza express that “Russia has been fundamental to Venezuela (…) We have found a great power that respects the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and that wants to establish, maintain and widen a sovereign relation.”

On the 75th anniversary of Victory Day in the Russian Federation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Venezuela “is one of those countries having the strength to counter attempts to impose the 19th century Monroe Doctrine in the world.”

“Venezuela is our friend in both Latin America and the world. We highly praise our relations as strategic partners on the basis of the agreements reached by Presidents Putin and Maduro,” stressed Lavrov on that occasion.
