- The Summit was called by the Republic of Azerbaijan as President of the Non-Aligned Movement for the 2019-2022 period.
- The meeting includes the participation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the Un General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Director-Genral of the World Health Organizaton (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat.
- The Summit goal is to strengthen global solidarity, and mobilize efforts of states and international organizations in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
- Previous to this Summit, the Non-Aligned Movement expressed its «concern about the rapid propagations of COVID-19, which poses a significant challenge to humankind» and acknowledged that «in the face of tis global emergency, the spirit of solidarity must be at the core of our efforts.»
- The Non-Aligned Movement has expressed its full support to the World Health Organization and the leadership of its Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, rejected the politization of the virus, and urged to put aside ideologies and discrimination for the well-being of humankind.
Non-Aligned Movement unites to fight COVID-19
The «United against COVID-19» Virtual Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is held on Monday, May 4, via video conference and headed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The meeting is held in the format of the Contact Group comprised by representatives of the regions that are part of the NAM.
