Venezuela investigates alleged complicity of officials from the embassies of Colombia, Chile and Mexico in frustrated assassination

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, regarding the testimonial elements submitted by the Communication and Information Minister, Jorge Rodríguez, in which officials from Colombia, Chile and Mexico´s embassies allegedly helped or would have been willing to provide assistance to Venezuelan citizens who participated in terrorist acts intended to assassinate high ranking officials of the Venezuelan government, including the Constitutional President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro, issues the following statement: The testimonies presented by Minister Jorge Rodríguez are the result of a rigorous investigation, and they were rendered by several detainees involved in the attempted assassination committed on August 4th, 2018. It is curious to see the tone and arguments used by the Colombia, Chile and Mexico’s governments, which instead of clarifying the circumstances – claimed by the self-confessed terrorists – whereby diplomatic officials of their respective countries who also had fleeing plans are involved; on the contrary, they tend to victimize themselves by using harsh expressions that disregard all diplomatic manners and uses. The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela expected the coherent and transparent international cooperation of these countries in order to conduct the necessary investigations within their institutions regarding the evidence gathered and determine the facts and establish the responsibilities, accordingly. The Colombia, Chile and Mexico governments’ reaction of denial in advance rather seems a statement to disavow responsibilities, showing their lack of interest towards any objective investigation for the purpose of concealing relations and responsibilities. Hasty reactions like those of the Chile and Mexico governments, undoubtedly, are used by the Venezuelan extreme right – who is capable of putting national peace at risk through the planning and implementation of terrorist acts – to feel protected and sheltered by some governments of the region to continue walking the path of violence and death. The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela will continue objectively investigating the very serious events occurred on August 4th, 2018, and presenting the definitive results of such investigation to the national and international public opinion.
