Vice-minister Pimentel Signs Book of Condolences for the Physical Departure of Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi

The Vice-minister for Africa of the People’s Power Ministry for Foreign Relations, Yuri Pimentel, signed this Tuesday at the Sudanese Embassy in Caracas, the book of condolences for the death of former Sudanese prime minister and head of the National Umma Party, Sadiq al-Mahdi .

The political leader had been transferred to a hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at the age of 84 to receive treatment for COVID-19, which was diagnosed in early November.

Al Mahdi was the last democratically elected prime minister in Sudan, in 1986, before Omar al Bashir’s coup in 1989, which brought him to power for almost three decades.

He was also one of the main opposition figures in the African country, and throughout his life he spent more than 7 years in different prisons, where he wrote several books, and was also forced into exile.
