Vice-minister Molina signs book of condolences for the death of PLO leader Saeb Erekat

The Vice-minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania of the People’s Power Ministry for Foreign Relations, Rubén Darío Molina, went on Wednesday to the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Caracas and signed the book of condolences for the death of the Secretary General of the to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat.

The former Palestinian chief negotiator in the peace process with Israel -since the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991- contracted coronavirus and was being treated in a Jerusalem hospital.

Saeb Erekat reported his positive diagnosis for COVID-19 on October 9 and was hospitalized in a serious condition on October 18, at the age of 65.

After the Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the PLO in 1993, the Palestinian diplomat became a faithful advisor to the leader, Yasir Arafat, and a key figure in the negotiations. He was also a minister and a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Among his greatest diplomatic successes is the recognition of Palestine as an observer state of the United Nations (UN), as well as its membership in other multilateral organizations, such as the International Criminal Court and UNESCO.
