Venezuela’s Public Consultation on Convention on the Rights of the Child underway

Students, children, human rights organizations, movements and institutions for the protection of children and adolescents have joined the public consultation on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child held in Venezuela since November 2.

The National Council for Human Rights launched this consultation process in order to receive opinions and recommendations on the policies and actions taken by the Venezuelan State regarding the human rights of children and adolescents.

The consultation process got underway with the participation of high school students from 16 states of the country who expressed via video conference the need of strengthening public policies on education and new technologies, and highlighted that the rights of students and their opinions are respected and taken into account in Venezuela.

Likewise, workers from the Independent Institute National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Idenna) raised their voices to condemn the sanctions imposed by the U.S. Government on Venezuela that have tried to constrain the capacity of the Venezuelan State and reverse the progress made in the defense of the rights of children and adolescents.

Also, in-person public consultations were held in the states of Lara and Zulia, following biosecurity protocols, where children and adolescents took part in leisure activities and provided valuable feedback on the implementation of the rights provided for by this Convention.

Executive Secretary of the National Council for Human Rights, Larry Devoe, stressed that the contributions and proposal made by the country’s different sectors will be incorporated into the sixth and seventh reports that Venezuela will submit to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
