The Puebla Group calls for the resignation of Luis Almagro from the OAS General Secretariat

The Puebla Group, a space for reflection and political exchange dedicated to the integral development of the Latin American peoples, requested this Wednesday the immediate resignation of Luis Almagro from the General Secretariat of the OAS, due to the unfortunate events caused last year in Bolivia (coup d’etat) which arose due to the ignorance of the presidential elections by this international organization before the irrefutable re-election of Evo Morales.

Here is the statement issued:

PUEBLA GROUP

October 21, 2020

The results of the recent election in Bolivia, with a resounding triumph of the MAS-IPSP option, led by Luis Arce, with more than 20% difference with the candidate Carlos Mesa, reliably confirmed what several studies of International investigations centers had indicated in recent months: that there was no fraud in the October 2019 elections and that Evo Morales should have been inaugurated as the legitimate President of Bolivia if the OAS, as an observer, had not ignored said elections.

The electoral questioning of the OAS, in addition, unleashed a situation of political and social violence, which ended in a coup and the subsequent resignation of President Evo Morales, who thus preserved social peace and saved his life, with the support of the Puebla Group, going into exile in Mexico and later in Argentina.

Furthermore, the first studies that analyze the results in the voting precincts that were pointed out by the OAS as examples of fraud in past elections, ratify the victory of the MAS-IPSP, even this time with a higher percentage than last October.

Given this evidence, it is clear that the regional leadership of the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, is seriously questioned. The role he played in the democratic destabilization of Bolivia and the exclusive relations he maintains with other countries in the area make it impossible for him to continue exercising the role of democratic mediation and facilitation that he should play at the Head of such an important position. His departure will help restore peace in the region and reactivate the regional integration that has been sorely lacking in these times of pandemic.
