Electoral Council submits input for 2014-2020 Country Report on CEDAW implementation

As part of the public consultation for the 2014-2020 Country Report on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), ratified by Venezuela in 1983, President of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Indira Alfonzo, submitted on Wednesday the Electoral Power’s input to Executive Secretary of the National Council for Human Rights, Larry Devoe, in the presence of Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, and Women Minister, Carolys Pérez.

At the event, held in the CNE headquarters in Caracas, CNE President highlighted that this input details institutional information on the actions taken by the Electoral Power from 2014 to 2020 regarding the political participation of women in the country’s public life.

“This activity strengthens us as a Democratic and Social State of Law and Justice, where equality, plurality and diversity are present in all and each of our actions,” stressed Alfonzo.

Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, thanked on behalf of the Venezuelan Government for the contribution of women to the Electoral Power that will be added to the Country Report Venezuela will present soon to the United Nations.

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela stands out for its policy and institutions at the service of women: laws that protect them, the Ministry for Women and Gender Equality, the transversal nature of women in all the elements of the Government and the State, the Council for Human Rights, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Citizens’ Power and the Judiciary,” explained the Venezuelan diplomat.

Arreaza pointed out that more work is needed to continue improving legal instruments and give Venezuelan women all the possibilities and conditions to develop comprehensively.

Minister Carolys Pérez invited the population to continue providing input until Friday, October 23, in the public consultation for the report on the CEDAW implementation.
