President Nicolás Maduro holds a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

This Wednesday, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a fruitful meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, where the commitment of the Venezuelan State to continue advancing in cooperation with her office in Geneva and her team in the country.

This was reported by the People’s Power Minister for Foreign Relations, Jorge Arreaza, who was present at the telematic meeting.

“A constructive dialogue, respectful for the guarantee of the human rights of our people”, said the Venezuelan diplomat on his Twitter account @jaarreaza.

The national president explained to the High Commissioner the importance of the report The Truth of Venezuela against Infamy, and updated it on the preparations for the upcoming elections on December 6, as well as informed her about the recent Anti-Blockade Law and about the economic aggression that is taking place against the country.

Finally, an evaluation of the COVID-19 situation in Venezuela was made, in which the president detailed the measures that have been used to respond to the pandemic, including the mechanisms to receive the large number of Venezuelans who have returned.

On September 15, the High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, acknowledged the progress made by her Office in cooperation and technical assistance with Venezuela, such as the review of police protocols on the use of force and a diagnosis of the factors that influence in the overcrowding of preventive detention centers, to which her team had access to visit, including those of the SEBIN and DGCIM.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between both parties aims to improve the protection and promotion of human rights in Venezuela, this includes the strengthening of national mechanisms for the protection of human rights and access to justice, as well as facilitating visits by Special Rapporteurs from the ONU.
