CNE’s proven integrity of electoral system for 20 years

“We are a democratic institution that has proven for almost two decades the integrity of its electoral system and the consolidation of an automated system, the most audited one in the region and the world.  As an institution, we will stand and become stronger by responding with our actions,” said President of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Indira Alfonzo Izaguirre, during an update on the Electoral Schedule this week.

The CNE president reiterated her invitation to Venezuelan and international accompaniment to participate in the parliamentary elections on December 6.

“This is an open process with its doors open to everyone who wants to participate. We have absolutely no doubt that this participation should take place with mutual respect,” she said.

“At the CNE, we are extremely respectful towards differences and the right of Venezuelan and international politicians to have doubts, questions and considerations. That’s why we are here, to respond them and clear them up,” stressed Alfonzo.

Rapprochement with universities

As part of the electoral body’s interinstitutional rapprochement, the CNE Board of Directors held a virtual meeting with the presidents of the 67 public and private universities of the country, with the participation of the Minister of People’s Power for University Education, César Trómpiz.

Alfonzo recognized the participation of the country’s universities and their commitment to “the core values of democratic life,” as she highlighted the willingness of some universities “to help us build technological tools and real-time digital auditing.”

Likewise, the CNE president pointed out that all the churches in the country are also welcomed to join these meetings for dialogue and analysis, and she extended the invitation to public and private media outlets.

“We are a house with open doors. We do not have intermediaries. We want to be the primary source. Come, because it’s election time,” said Alfonzo.

Sticking to schedule

Regarding the Electoral Schedule, Alfonzo recalled that the registration for candidates for this year’s December parliamentary elections was extended to August, 26, “after receiving some suggestions and considerations from political organizations, since they need to mobilize, hold meetings and reach a consensus of the country’s democratic organizations,” she explained.

Also, the CNE president said that each stage in the Electoral Schedule “has to do with guaranteeing the development of the system. As each stage is closed, it is audited and consolidated.”

Finally, Alfonzo stressed the reliability of the Venezuelan electoral system, “which is automated, and this automation is backed up with technological encrypting to safeguard and guarantee the right to vote, and we guarantee that with 15 audits,” she said.
