Venezuela mourns passing of U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights Leader John Lewis

On Saturday, July 18, Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs Jorge Arreaza, on behalf of the people and Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, mourned the passing of U.S. Congressman John Lewis, one of the most important civil rights leaders in his country.

John Robert Lewis was one of the leaders who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and also had a very important role in several marches in 1965 for civil rights and racial equality in the United States that led him to become a prominent figure of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and Georgia Democrat congressman until he died on Friday, July 17, at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer.

Foreign Minister Arreaza stressed on his Twitter account @jaarreaza that “we are inspired by his unrelenting struggle against injustice, that which implies, like he said, getting into #goodtrouble.”

As a congressman, John Lewis strongly opposed Donald Trump’s and his Republican colleagues’ policies and statements.
