Foreign Minister Arreaza extends condolences for the death of the Chilean human rights activist Ángela Jeria

On Thursday, at 93 years of age, the outstanding human rights activist Ángela Jeria, a Chilean with an important role in Latin America, and mother of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, died.

Given the unfortunate news, the People’s Power Minister for Foreign Relations of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, through his official Twitter account, @jaarreaza, extended condolences to her relatives on behalf of the Bolivarian Government.

“We regret the sensitive death of Ángela Jeira, a prominent Chilean human rights defender, who faced torture, exile and repression during the dictatorship. We extend the condolences of President Nicolás Maduro, to her daughter Michelle Bachelet and her loved ones. Peace to her soul.”

Jeria, in addition to maintaining her political activism, was considered a human rights fighter, after being detained by the National Intelligence Directorate, exiled and tortured in Villa Grimaldi and Cuatro Álamos, as part of the dictatorship that Augusto Pinochet exercised in Chile. After the return of democracy, along with her daughter Michelle Bachelet, they undertook worldwide trips, denouncing the repression and human rights violations that were being committed in their country.
