ALBA-TCP will address post-pandemic economic weaknesses and strengths at High Level conference

At the request of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela as a founding member, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) will soon hold a high-level virtual conference on the post-pandemic economy, in order to determine the weaknesses and strengths of the member countries in economic matters, once the health crisis caused by COVID-19 has been overcome.

The virtual appointment, the first under this modality of the regional integration bloc, will be aimed at “setting the criteria of the real economy that guarantees our peoples to live by living”, said President Nicolás Maduro on May 27, instructing the Vice-president Delcy Rodríguez and the Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza to make the coordination for the conference.

He indicated that the presidents and prime ministers of the member states would participate, and proposed the possibility of inviting other countries.

ALBA-TCP was officially founded on December 14, 2004, as a result of the strategic vision of the revolutionary leaders Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez, in order to become an integration platform for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, and as counterpart of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), promoted by the United States to keep imposing its economic domination in the region.

Currently, the Alliance is made up of Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Dominica, Granada, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Venezuela.

The emphasis of integration is guided by the principles of solidarity, complementarity, justice and cooperation, with the purpose of uniting the capacities and strengths of the member countries to generate the structural transformations and the system of relationships necessary to achieve integral development.

The last ALBA-TCP Summit, the XVII, was held on December 14, 2019 in Havana, Cuba, in commemoration of the 15 years since the organization was founded.
