Caricom calls for lifting of sanctions against Venezuela and Cuba

The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) held a special emergency videoconference meeting on Wednesday, during which they agreed on a joint action plan in the battle against Covid-19. Regional leaders agreed on a collective approach of the International Financial Institutions to access assistance to face the financial fiscal challenges derived from the crisis. In this framework, they requested the lifting of sanctions against Venezuela and Cuba “for humanitarian reasons, since all countries must be part of the global effort to combat the Covid-19 pandemic”. The United Nations (UN) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have also called for the lifting of illegal unilateral coercive measures. Even Pope Francis called in recent days for the so-called sanctions to be “relaxed”, warning that they prevent offering citizens their own aid according to the great needs of the moment.

The Caricom Heads of Government also condemned that the resources for the World Health Organization (WHO) were being threatened “at a time when everyone must unite to lead the fight against the pandemic”. Caribbean leaders, at the special meeting, received presentations from the Caribbean Public Health Agency and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), among other institutions.
