Venezuela presents the National Prevention and Containment Plan for Covid-19 to the United Nations system

In order to publicize the measures that the National Executive has taken to address the Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), the People’s Power Minister for Health, Carlos Alvarado, held a working meeting with the United Nations System , as well as with international organizations. During the meeting, the Minister detailed the five components of the National Plan for the prevention and containment of Coronavirus, among them, the strengthening of epidemiological and laboratory surveillance, sanitary control at entry points, the implementation of clinical-epidemiological management protocols for the suspected and confirmed cases of Covid-19, communication and social mobilization, as well as the identification and strengthening of sentinel centers. The presentation also served to expose the list of priority needs of the country – both in medicines, medical supplies, and in equipment – to face the containment of the pandemic. After the presentation of the National Coronavirus Prevention and Containment Plan, the coordination of the United Nations system and other international agencies present, agreed to review the action plan to evaluate it and prepare a cooperation offer in the framework of the lines and needs presented by the People’s Power Ministry for Health. The working meeting was attended by Peter Grohmann, Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations System in Venezuela, Gerardo de Cosio, Chief of the Interim Mission of the Pan American Sanitary Office and Interim WHO-PAHO Representative for Venezuela, Samir El Hawary, head of the Office of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Venezuela, Jan Harfst, resident representative of the United Nations Development program (UNDP) in Venezuela, Herve Ludovic De Lys, representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in Venezuela, Jorge González Caro, National representative of the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa) Venezuela, Regina Lopez De Khalek, country director of the Joint United Nations Program for HIV (UNAIDS) Venezuela. Also in attendance were Jorge Vallés, head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Venezuela Mission, Arnaud De Baecque, head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Venezuela and Caricom States, Pilar Bauza, coordinator of Salud para Venezuela from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Michele De Tomaso, head of the Country Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Gerardo Briceño Alviarez, Vice-minister of Resources, Technology and Regulation, and Alexander Yánez, Vice-minister for Multilateral Issues of the People’s Power Ministry for Foreign Relations.
