Venezuela and India celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations

As part of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of India and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, this Monday a photographic exhibition was inaugurated in the central courtyard of Casa Amarilla, “Antonio José de Sucre”, in Caracas, which identifies key meetings of rapprochement and cooperation between both countries. The activity was also framed on the 150th anniversary of the birth of the independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi, and also saw the presentation of cultural groups and a sample of gastronomic tasting with typical dishes of both cultures. Rubén Darío Molina, Vice-minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania, of the People’s Power Ministry for Foreign Relations, stressed that a relationship of mutual respect for the Charter of the United Nations, to non-interference in internal affairs of each State and respect for each development model, is strengthened with India. Also, the Charg’e d’ffairs of India in Venezuela, Vishwa Nath Goel, recalled that October 1, 1959, is the memorable date on which diplomatic relations were established between India and Venezuela, and since then they have enjoyed close and cordial ties with many high level interactions; stressing that two Indian prime ministers visited Venezuela, the first in 1968 and the second in 1991; and President Hugo Chavez visited his country in 2005 and the Indian Vice-president came to Venezuela in September 2016, at the XVII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

In addition, he indicated that India opened its embassy in Caracas in 1973 and shared similar opinions on different topics of mutual interest in several international forums. “Venezuela has been a reliable partner for India’s energy resources. Indian oil companies have two joint ventures with PDVSA. Indian companies have invested around 800 million dollars in the Venezuelan hydrocarbons sector. Indian products, especially pharmacists have gained due recognition in the Venezuelan market due to their high quality and reasonable prices. There is a high acceptance of Indian art and culture in Venezuela, Indian spiritual groups have established several centers in Caracas”, said diplomat Vishwa Nath Goel. The Council for Cultural Relations of India has also granted four scholarship for Venezuelan students to complete their university education in the Asian country. The cultural event was in charge of the Taj Mahal Venezuela Dance School, an Odissi presentation and the cultural group of the Musical Notes on the Net Movement, among other groups.
