Chinese Book Shelf opens in Librerías del Sur in Teresa Carreño Theater

The branch of Librerías del Sur located in the Teresa Careño Theater opened its doors this Saturday for the signing ceremony of the Tour of Venezuela Exhibition of Chinese Books and the inauguration of the Chinese Book Shelf, during the XV International Book Fair of Venezuela (Filven) 2019. The event was attended by representatives of the Chinese delegation, as well as the president of the Librerías del Sur Foundation, Mary Pemjean, and the People’s Power Minister for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, who recalled that there are more than 650 activities scheduled in the framework of this festival of letters in the country, which the Venezuelan people can enjoy until November 17, including this new venue for the approach to literature of the Asian nation. The Minister said that “this time we want to open a space, located in the Teresa Carreño Theater, which has the name of a great Venezuelan writer, Aquiles Nazoa, who was a poet, writer, humorist. This character turns 100 in 2020 and President Nicolás Maduro wants to celebrate the centenary of this writer, so he created a commission and has given me the responsibility of being in charge of it”. In addition, the head of the Mppc recalled the relevant cultural events that have united China and Venezuela, and stressed that “China is a cultural power. Geographical, geopolitical and cultural reasons kept us away for a long time, however, Commander Chávez began a dynamic approach which President Nicolás Maduro has maintained (…) When historians of the future investigate when that relationship was established between Venezuela and China will have to note that in 2019 China participated as a guest country of honor at the International Book Fair of Venezuela and from that time, cultural relations experienced a historical leap”. He also reported that after this signing, he has the commitment to make the Venezuelan Book Shelf a reality in China. “It is important to highlight that these activities strengthen the relationship between both nations”, said the president of the Librerías del Sur Foundation, Mary Pemjean, who thanked the effort that has been made to create the shelf in these spaces and the excellent participation of the Chinese delegation at the XV Filven 2019.
