Cuba warns that US actions against Venezuela threaten regional peace and security

The bilateral relationship between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Cuba is based on mutual respect and solidarity, said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Friday during his speech at the General Assembly of the Organization of Nations United (UN). Similarly, he ratified his country’s rejection to the application of severe unilateral coercive measures against the Venezuelan State and the dispossession of its assets, businesses and export revenues. These actions, he warned, constitute a serious threat to regional peace and security and it’s a direct aggression against the Venezuelan population. Consequently, he urged the forum to become aware of these facts, to demand the cessation of unilateral coercive measures, to reject the use of force and to encourage respectful dialogue based on the principles of international law and the Venezuelan legal system. “We endorse without hesitation the legitimate government presided by fellow Nicolás Maduro Moros and the civic-military union of the Bolivarian and Chavista people”, said the Cuban Foreign Minister.

Rio Pact: an absurd decision that represents a historical setback

Within the same lines, he reprimanded the “absurd” decision of the United States and a group of countries subordinated to Washington’s foreign policy to activate against Venezuela the “obsolete” Inter American Reciprocal Assistance Treaty (Rio Pact), which contemplates the use of force military. “It is an absurd decision that represents a historical setback and a danger to regional peace and security which seeks to justify, by means of a legal artifice, the intervention in the internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic”, he warned. The Cuban Foreign Minister also warned that the invocation of the Rio Pact constitutes a “rude” violation of the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, which the heads of state and government signed in Havana in January of 2014. “The US decision to resuscitate the fatal Monroe Doctrine, an instrument of domination of imperialism, under which military interventions and invasions, coups d’etats, military dictatorships and the most horrific crimes occurred in Our America”, he added. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also denounced the qualitative increase in US hostility and blockade measures against Cuba and ratified the island’s support for the Republic of Nicaragua in the face of destabilizing maneuvers directed from the White House.
