Non-Aligned Countries Advocate for the Independence of Puerto Rico

On behalf of the 120 member states of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (Mnoal), the ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations (UN), Samuel Moncada, made a call to the Government of the United States of America to assume its responsibility to accelerate the process that will allow the Puerto Rican people to fully exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence. During the meeting of the UN Committee on Decolonization, held on Monday, the Permanent Representative of Venezuela reaffirmed that the Puerto Rican people have the right to freedom and called for the consideration of the question of Puerto Rico in all its aspects. In this regard, the Venezuelan diplomat recalled that during the XVIII Ministerial Conference of the Half Period of the Movement, in April 2018, the concern was expressed about the political situation that Puerto Rico is going through, which impedes its sovereign decision-making reragarding to its serious economic and social problems. “On that occasion, the ministers expressed their concern about the legislation adopted by the United States Congress to impose a fiscal control board on the Government of Puerto Rico, which will decisively attempt against the limited power of the Government of San Juan on its budget, fiscal issues and other issues. In addition, they urged the Government of the United States of America to return to the Puerto Rican people the occupied territory and facilities of the Island of Vieques and the Naval Station of Roosevelt Road, which are part of the Latin American and Caribbean nation”, said Ambassador Samuel Moncada . On Monday, the Decolonization Committee of the United Nations Organization approved by consensus a draft decision about Puerto Rico, presented by Cuba and co-sponsored by Venezuela, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Russia and China.
