Samuel Moncada: Venezuela ratifies its independence with withdrawall from the OAS

Venezuela must celebrate its departure from the Organization of American States (OAS) as an act of independence and sovereignty, said the ambassador of Venezuela to the United Nations (UN), Samuel Moncada. In an exclusive interview for the Venezuelan News Agency (AVN), the ambassador said that in this way Venezuela responds to the decision taken by 18 member states of the Organization, led by the US government, to turn the international body into an instrument for political, military and economic intervention against Venezuela. “We can not remain there, it’s an act of liberation, we’re leaving an organization that basically serves the United States and that’s why we should celebrate this as an act of independence”, Moncada said. He also stressed that these States have violated all the postulates enshrined in their founding document, the OAS Charter, which establishes non-interference in the internal affairs of other States, the non-application of extortion, coercion, and pressure with which they seek to extract economic or political benefits from other members of the body. “The OAS sacrificed its Charter, destroyed it, violated it, the Secretary General (Luis Almagro) calls for war, the United States controls it”, denounced the Venezuelan diplomat. Moncada also denounced that within the group of countries from the multilateral instance that have demonstrated against Venezuela, are several States that act “against their will”. “Haiti is part of that group, what is the conflict between Venezuela and Haiti, and why does Haiti vote against Venezuela? because it is under pressure from the United States”, said the Venezuelan representative before the OAS, while adding that one of the measures of pressure of the United States against the Haitian government is the threat of suspension of the Temporary Protection Program that allows the permanence of the islanders in the North American nation. “Extortion, because that is what it is, extortion and the power of the United States over small countries created this coalition that fractured the OAS, but this does not mean that the whole hemisphere or the whole region supports that decision, not even those who are taking it”, said the diplomat, assuring that this has made the organism lose legitimacy in the diplomatic and multilateral sphere. Since Luis Almagro took office as Secretary General of the Organization, the former Uruguayan foreign minister has protected and justified the onslaught of economic sanctions and unilateral coercive measures that have been registered in recent years, in order to suffocate the Venezuelan people and generate a social implosion that causes a political change in Venezuela. In view of this, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, informed the Secretary General of the OAS of the decision to initiate the definitive withdrawal of Venezuela from the instance. “It is shameful that this organization did not leave even a complaint, at least a statement against these interventionist actions”, said the president in the letter delivered on April 27, 2017.
