A Venezuelan proposal for the world: “International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace”

For the first time, this Wednesday, a historic High Level Meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) was held to commemorate and promote the “International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace”. This important date has entered the UN calendar since December 12, 2018, following the adoption of resolution 73/127 proposed by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and supported by the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (Mnoal). The establishment of the “International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace” was promoted by Venezuela and the Member States of Mnoal to promote the principles that gave rise to the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, after the historic Afro-Asian Conference of Bandung in 1955. This is a concrete initiative of the Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace to promote, defend and strengthen multilateralism, to reaffirm the validity of the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter and the full validity of the norms of international law. On behalf of the 120 member countries of the Mnoal, the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, said that, given the multiple threats to international peace and security, multilateralism, together with international law and diplomacy, is the only shield of developing countries to protect themselves from any act of aggression; At the same time, he asserted that multilateralism does not represent a threat to sovereignty, nor to the national interests of any State, since it constitutes one of the ways to guarantee compliance with the principle of sovereign equality of States. Likewise, FM Arreaza reaffirmed during the High Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly the confidence of the Non-Aligned Countries in multilateralism and diplomacy to achieve the success of the three pillars of the United Nations: peace and security. , sustainable development, and human rights. During his speech, the Venezuelan diplomat expressed on behalf of the member countries of the Mnoal their deep concern and firm opposition to unilateralism, arbitrariness, unilateral coercive measures and threats of the use of force. In this regard, the Venezuelan representative underscored the commitment of Mnoal to promote and support the revitalization of the multilateral system, in order to promote stability, tranquility and a lasting peace around the world, with a view to the achievement of a just and fair world order. “We call on the members of the international community to join the efforts that we have been advancing from the South to achieve the full realization of the three pillars of the Organization: peace, sustainable development and human rights. Let us become champions of inclusive and effective multilateralism, and of diplomacy for peace, to preserve future generations from the scourge of war!”, Concluded Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza.
