Venezuela reiterates request for the capture and extradition of citizens implicated in the attempted assassination on August 4

On Monday, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela sent two new verbal notes to the Foreign Ministry of Colombia, asking for the extradition request of the citizens involved in the attempted assassination against President Nicolás Maduro and the presumed presence in Venezuelan territory of three members of the National Liberation Army (ELN). With these two notes, there are already 14 communications sent by Venezuela to the New Granada government, of which no diplomatic response has been yet obtained. The request is submitted in accordance with the framework of hemispheric cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism based on the Inter-American Convention against Terrorism and the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings, of the General Assembly of the United Nations. During the last 5 months the Bolivarian Government has complied with the activation of international diplomatic and legal channels to request the extradition of those mentioned citizens, but no support has been obtained from the Colombian State. From August to October of the year 2018, a total of 14 verbal notes were sent, but they received no response. Once again the Bolivarian Government in its interest to condemn this unfortunate event, requests the Republic of Colombia and its intelligence institutions to activate the necessary procedures to detect the alleged terrorists, in case they try to or have managed to enter the Colombian territory. Likewise, the Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, through its Vice Ministry for Latin America, insists once again on the need to reactivate high-level direct communication between the Foreign Ministries of both countries in order to re-establish the appropriate diplomatic channel to deal with bilateral matters. On the other hand, the Venezuelan Government stressed that “only at the request of the Colombian Presidents and in order to contribute to the Peace of the peoples of Latin America, the Venezuelan State has interacted with the representative of the Colombian guerrilla groups, as part of the negotiation processes for the cessation of armed conflicts in the Americas”.
