Venezuela exhorts to respect the principle of non-militarization of the space

During a meeting on International Cooperation for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, held on the afternoon of this Wednesday in the context of the 73rd period of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, the delegation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the The multilateral organization raised the threat to international peace and security that represents the possible triggering of an arms race in outer space.

“We call on all States to scrupulously respect the principle of non-militarization of outer space and to refrain from actions aimed to use it for the deployment of weapons of any kind”, said the alternate ambassador of Venezuela to the UN, Henry Suárez.

The diplomatic representative of Venezuela welcomed the draft treaty proposed by China and Russia regarding the prevention of the placement of weapons in outer space, considering it a basis for the possible adoption of a legal instrument to protect peace in outer space.

In another order of ideas, the Venezuelan delegation expressed its concern about the development of spy satellites, by some member states of the UN, which constitutes a violation of the sovereignty of States.

Likewise, the Ambassador, Henry Suárez, pointed out that Venezuela recognizes the important role of space science and technology and its applications for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We call on developed countries to provide assistance and cooperation to developing countries in the implementation of space programs. Likewise, we invite the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (Copuos) to give special importance to the promotion of space technologies in the context of sustainable development, and to strengthen the initiatives of the space community to achieve the Agenda 2030”, said the Venezuelan delegation.

In this context, Venezuela highlighted the national policies they are developing to promote the peaceful use of outer space, such as the Bolivarian Agency for Aerospace Activities (ABAE), which mission is to consolidate the plans, programs and projects of research and development that allow the insertion of space technology in the decision making of the Venezuelan public sector.
