Mnoal rejects politicization in the approach of the DD.HH. in specific countries

On Wednesday, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on behalf of the 120 Member States of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM), condemned the politicization when addressing human rights situations in specific countries.

During the Interactive Dialogues with Special Rapporteurs and Representatives on Human Rights Situations in specific countries, the NAM reiterated that all human rights issues should be addressed in the global context through a constructive dialogue-based approach, being fair and equitable, with objectivity and respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the non-interference in the internal affairs of States, impartiality, the non-selectivity and transparency as guiding principles, taking into account the political, historical, social, religious and cultural rights of each country.

The Movement also expressed great concern about the sustained and growing practice of approving resolutions in a selectively way on specific countries within the United Nations (UN), as well as in its General Assembly as in the Human Rights Council., which constitutes a practice that exploits human rights for political purposes and weakens international cooperation in the promotion and effective protection of human rights.

Likewise, Venezuela highlighted the importance of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which serves as the main intergovernmental cooperation mechanism to examine everything related to human rights in all countries, without distinction and with the full participation of the country concerned, taking into consideration their needs in terms of capacity building. The Venezuelan delegation stressed the importance of guaranteeing its implementation “as a cooperative mechanism oriented towards action, based on objective and reliable information, and in an impartial, transparent, non-selective, constructive, non-contentious and non-politicized manner”.
