Social Movements debate strategies to defend sovereignty in IV Plenary FCP Unasur

For the second consecutive day the IV plenary of the Forum of Citizen Participation of Unasur is held with the participation of more than 44 social movements of the country that meet to discuss and refine strategies in everything that concerns the defense of the attacked Homeland by the imperial powers.

The activity that takes place in the facilities of the Simón Rodríguez National Training Center in Los Teques, Miranda state, has the objective of forming a work plan from the social bases that allows, through different areas, to defend the sovereignty and self-determination of the peoples that have been the object of the attacks of the North American empire.

In his speech, the Vice-minister for International Communication of Mppre, William Castillo, said that this mechanism of debate, designed by the commander Hugo Chávez, focuses its range of action on the integration not only of the State but of the peoples, reason why, spaces such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) were created to strengthen social organizations for the defense of sovereignty.

“We believe that UNASUR is alive in its idea, in its project, we can not let the attacks of right-wing governments that are going to pass away in time, destroy an idea and a dream of Latin American integration”, he said.

Pedro Sassone, representative of Venezuela before the General Secretary of UNASUR, indicated that this process that takes place annually with social movements has made far-reaching changes. For this year, Sassone explained that it is planned to focus the work in the training of social movements to strengthen their range of action in the face of the situation that the peoples who are being victims of the neoliberal policies of foreign powers are going through.

“The peoples have to go to the defense in terms of awareness and initiative because of the idea that integration is not only the responsibility of the government but also the competence of the people. That’s why integration is the way to strengthen the sovereignty of peoples”, he said.

Unify forces against imperial attacks

José Pereira, from the Amazonas state, he is part of the national team of the Bolivarian Circles, which has been working on the concept of Latin American and Caribbean integration.

Pereira said that the integration of the peoples is a latent threat for the US government because it goes against their hegemonic interests, reason why they apply coercive and unilateral measures against those progressive governments that implement political models dissimilar to capitalism.

“Within the framework of the political situation that the peoples of the region are going through, the social movements have been advancing in the permanent action of the defense that must be embodied in the people” he said.

In this regard, Argenis Delgado, member of the Afro-Venezuelan Movement, stressed the refusal of the North American empire to accept multilateralism as a new axis of world politics.

In this context, he said that it is necessary to deploy the forces of social movements in order to stop the hegemonic pretensions of the United States who have organizations such as the Lima Group to execute their interventionist policy.

Finally, Néstor Suarez, national spokesperson for the sector of people with disabilities from Apure state, highlighted the importance of empowering the people, the People’s Power as a single strategic unit in defense of the Homeland.
