A total of 19 organizations, social movements and human rights activists repudiated the statements made last September 14 by the General Secretary of the OAS, Luis Almagro, who did not hesitate on the possibility of a military intervention in Venezuela with the aim of overthrowing the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro Moros.
Among the movements which signed this declaration are the Organización Sures; Socialist Studies Center Jorge Rodríguez; Collective Network The Feminist Spider; National Movement of Friendship and Mutual Solidarity Venezuela Cuba; Alba Movements; United Residential Workers for Venezuela; Pioneers camps.
In this sense, the aforementioned organizations request the OAS to declare itself against the statements issued by Almagro and therefore proceed to dismiss them.
Here is the full statement:
Statement in rejection of the declarations of the General Secretary of the Organization of American States in favor of a military intervention against Venezuela.
The undersigned organizations, social movements and human rights activists strongly reject the statements issued on September 14 by the General Secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, in which he suggests a military intervention to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. These statements were issued from the city of Cúcuta, Colombia, and he clearly expressed that: “I believe we should not rule out any option regarding to a military intervention to overthrow the regime of Nicolás Maduro”.
These statements are aligned with the plans announced by the United States Government for intervention in our country, aimed to change the government in Venezuela and to remove the constitutional and democratic government of President Nicolás Maduro. In this context, we consider that these statements are far from the work that should have a General Secretary of an organization that has among its functions the achievement of peace and solidarity among the countries of the region. His statements also violate the fundamental principles contained in the OAS Charter.
The pronouncement made by the General Secretary, legitimizes a possible intervention of foreign forces in the country, disregarding all the harmful consequences that from every point of view entails on the civilian population, such as the death of children and adolescents, the destruction of the infrastructure of the country and essential services, terrorism, among other violations of human rights.
Such statements were rejected forcefully by the countries of the region that are members of the OAS as well as by other countries of the entire world, who called for peace and nonintervention; as they also publicly requested the dismissal of General Secretary Almagro.
In light of the foregoing, the undersigned human rights and social organizations and movements request:
1. That the General Assembly of the OAS convene an extraordinary session and issue a statement in rejection of the pronouncement made by its General Secretary.
2. That the General Assembly proceed with the dismissal of the General Secretary whenever his actions have violated the fundamental principles of the OAS Charter.
3. We urge the Organization of American States to foster spaces for dialogue and exercise strategies framed in the search for peace and solidarity among the countries that comprise it.
