Strengthening defense issues characterized meeting of ministers in Venezuela

Brazil’s defense minister, Joaquim Silva y Luna, was on Tuesday in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, for a working meeting with the defense minister of that country, Vladimir Padrino López.

According to Minister Silva and Luna, the main reason for the meeting was to strengthen relations between the Armed Forces of the two countries through bilateral border meetings, working groups, the increase of military personnel in courses at the Military Schools, and the creation of strategic associations in the field of defense products.

The meeting between the military authorities was marked by an atmosphere of camaraderie and nobility, since the arrival at the airport. Minister Silva y Luna was received, with military honors, by Minister Padrino López, by his general officers, by the Governor of the Bolívar State and by thecharge d’affaires, Minister Counselor José Wilson.

During the bilateral meeting, Silva and Luna was accompanied by the members of the Ministry of Defense: the special advisers Admiral Barreto, Brigadier Reyes, General Garrido; by the deputy chief of International Organizations, Brigadier Minelli; besides the Defense attache in Venezuela, colonel of the Liberali Army. The Venezuelan General Barroso was also part of the Brazilian delegation.

In the end, the two ministers, in their statements, expressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among their Armed Forces.

“We have come to renew our commitment that what unites us is not only our borders, but our friendship, built from the time of the formation of our nationality, when many of our people fought together for the foundation of our countries”, said Silva y Luna.

“We have celebrated here an act of confidence, for the reconstruction of our work together, for our countries and, particularly, for our region, which needs to maintain stability and peace, so it grows economically, politically and, mainly, fraternally”.

The Minister Padrino López considered the meeting to be of much understanding, initiating with a cycle of courtesy and fraternal friendship, regarding to what the Armed Force institutions represents, as a window for stability and peace among nations. He also spoke about increasing the level of educational exchange and strengthening the bonds of trust and cooperation.

The bilateral meetings are part of the work agenda of the Ministry of Defense, in order to enhance the dialogue between the Brazilian Armed Forces and friendly nations.
